Burdens and Plans

"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29)

"'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope’." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Somehow, since my birthday is 11/29, these promises have become favorites of mine. I am reminded of the turning of another year, even while only entering into my birth month of November.  What appropriate and timely promises from my Heavenly Father, in Whom I live, move, and have my being! In Him is no darkness or shadow of turning. I am complete in Him. Of His fulness I receive, and grace upon grace.

Yes, it’s now turning from October to November. Each day my hair turns a little whiter as we move seasonally into a time of greater darkness. This time of year matches the mood of so many of us - often because there are “loud voices”  calling on us to look to the right and to the left, that only want us to notice and be afraid of or depressed about the darkness.

But that is not the only thing to look at! Might this also be the time to turn on the “inside Light”, shed in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, and set our minds in the brightness of heavenly places revealed in God’s word? Maybe it’s time to take more time to notice His exceeding great and precious promises to us, in such a time as this? And we do well to bring to remembrance that "weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” (Psalm 30:5)

Instead of “plans” that we make without His input, perhaps it’s time to receive His plans for us, as we give Him thanks for His gifts of Grace.

“How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge in the shadow of Your wings. They drink their fill of the abundance of Your house; And You give them to drink of the river of Your delights.”

(Psalm 36:7,8)

Lord, You do keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on You! Thank You!
