Politics And Prophets

Here's where I'm at with the political reality show:

"The wicked have drawn the sword And have bent their bow,To cast down the poor and needy, To slay those who are of upright conduct. Their sword shall enter their own heart, And their bows shall be broken." Ps 37:14,15.

That has always been the problem, but all who are called by His Name rely on God's promises about how it will turn out. God's got this! He's taken care of it before and He always will. He does not change. Nor does His word. There are major and minor trouble makers. But blessed are the peacemakers! The first order of business is where to pull away the focus and where to place it. Has God redeemed us from the kingdom of darkness, and translated us into His kingdom of Light, or not? Where do you live, spiritually speaking?

What is somewhat disturbing is believers who keep talking about the annihilation of mankind. Think about that. If this is so, then Christ’s words are null and void that, according to Matthew 16:18, that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. The church is made up of human beings. If humankind is gone, and there are no more human beings, then there’s no church. But that is not what Christ tells us. So, such dark claims are patently antichrist! They deny His truth, His promise.

Therefore...

"Do not put your trust in princes, Nor in a son of man, in whom there is no help." Ps 146:3.

The other thing not to trust in is folks who think they "have a word from the Lord" that applies to the political figures of our time. So called prophets. Caution! Where's the word of repentance? That ALWAYS accompanied what the prophets of old had to say, upon careful examination of Scripture... God's discipline is involved or His judgments. What is spoken by one who claims to prophesy is to be carefully weighed (1 Corinthians 14:29). (Another subject for another day.)

"And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son He receives.” Endure suffering as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you do not experience discipline like everyone else, then you are illegitimate children and not true sons." Hebrews 12:5-8.

God sometimes has His own brand of tough love. We don't hear about that too much these days. He’s in the business of bringing many sons fo glory! It's mostly "I want my rights. I want my good times.” Who doesn’t? But there’s a time and purpose for everything under Heaven.

Christ says, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:33,34.

Priority! It’s always the same, in any time or season. What to seek first!

"Do not fret over those who do evil; do not envy those who do wrong For they wither quickly like grass and wilt like tender plants. Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart." Ps 37:1-4.

Where to prioritize and focus?

"This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. LISTEN TO HIM!" Mt 17:5b. (Caps - my focus)

"On many past occasions and in many different ways, God spoke to our fathers through the prophets. But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe." Hebrews 1:1,2.

That’s a pretty impressive CV, don’t you think? Universe making. Creature redeeming. Who among politicians or prophets (legit or otherwise!) can claim any of that? Who keeps all His promises?

Here’s something the Apostle Paul exhorts us to think about:

"If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory

"Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them. But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all

"Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, long suffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do

"But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." Colossians 3:1-17.

Seek... put off... put on. All those places where it says "therefore"? Those are good places to stop and ask what it's there for.

It may be that this is a huge wake up call to participate in Christ, to participate in our salvation more fully than ever before, as we keep on asking, seeking, and knocking for the Holy Spirit. It’s not something we can do on our own! Advent is an especially "Advent-agious" time for this reminder.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this." Isaiah 9:6,7.

The political reality show pulls us away from the work our Lord would do in us, and through us, onto things that are destined to pass away. Each of us needs to prayerfully discern and determine what our involvement needs to be in it.

This too shall pass.
