Truth IS a Consequence
Remember that old quiz show Truth or Consequences? It had a long run beginning in radio in 1940, followed by several other incarnations on TV with various hosts, all the way until 1988! That's a long time to be "always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." (2 Timothy 3:7) As if truth is a mere game or pass time. (There's also a town called Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, by the way.)
A curious thing emerges in numerous conversation threads: People say they are "waiting for God" to reveal "the truth." This seems to be a consensus based on memes about truth, but no real definition of it. As if God is just going to hand it to you in some whimsical fashion. "The truth is out there" was the buzzword from the X Files sci fi show. Kind of true. Kind of not. Ah yes! The big secret truth awaiting so called disclosure.
No one is actually hiding truth if people are willing to look for it and be open to it. But the question is, what "truth" exactly do you seek? I double dog dare you to define it! What's your definition? How did you come by it?
And how is Truth to be actually discerned?
Here's a little something from Jesus that reveals truth as a consequence of something pretty radical. “...If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:31b,32 NKJV.
ACV says it like this: "If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”
If… then… and… and.
To hold fast to and live in accordance with the teachings of Jesus = Discipleship. The consequence is that truth - as Jesus wishes to reveal it - is revealed as a consequence of full surrender of self, life, and entirety of being to Him.
That's not easy believism. It's radical trust, radical discipleship empowered by His call through Word and Spirit, "Follow Me!" His call is to awaken. It is a rebirth into a whole new life, a new way of relating to all, to everything. It means being called out of darkness into His Kingdom of Light and Life, to live moved along by and empowered with the Holy Spirit, in accordance with God's Word, in fellowship with like minded disciples.
These days everyone has a personal idea about what truth is. My truth. Your truth. Their truth. It's all relative, so we can all just get along like one big happy family. Many may be waiting for God to put His stamp of approval on their particular version of truth. It doesn't work that way in the Kingdom of God. The Gospel of the Kingdom which Jesus proclaimed is not one of “anything goes.” His Truth is self mortifying, resurrecting as a new creature. That relative truth is only a perspective, and an opinion based on perspective, often influenced by pop culture and all of its inclusive, eternal life defeating attitudes.
At some point this relative truth always results in a clash to one degree or another, as it's based on self interest and not on God's wisdom in Jesus Christ. We’re seeing the results of self interested, self indulgent truth in our world, in the USA in particular today. And that is definitely not The Truth that sets you free. In fact, it goes the other direction into enslavement - spiritually, morally, domestically, politically. There’s no way around facing up to this.
Just something to ponder for the day…
