Choose Humility, Not Pride
How have we sunk so low that "pride" is taken in soul destroying behaviors?! Let's just start with that. For any who think this is "just Old Testament," fast forward to the last verses of the Scripture in the New Testament. Along with many other references. Grace doesn't get you off the hook so you can wallow in sin. Rather it is the very power the energy of God to lift anyone up out of it and to walk in newness of life - the will of God for human beings in this life.
"Blessed are those who DO His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie."
And who is it that says this? “I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star.” See this in Revelation 22 (NKJV, but the same truth is there no matter which translation). Apparently there were "free thinkers" in the early Church as well, since this is addressed to them. When that happens, the message to be carried to the world in need of redemption becomes watered down and weak to say the least!
The Wisdom and Prophetic literature of old also has much to say about pride of any sort, especially the Proverbs. Probably because pride is something that comes from being in league with the primal arch rebel of old (Lucifer, Satan) who kicked off the rebellion against his Creator - Who is Love as it is in perfection and completeness (not according to the definitions of demons or rebellious men) - and pulled many into complicity with his coup.
"I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight and strength." Proverbs 8:12-14.
"Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and turn away from evil." Proverbs 3:7.
"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Proverbs 16:18
"By loving devotion and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the LORD one turns aside from evil." Proverbs 16:6.
"I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their iniquity. I will end the haughtiness of the arrogant and lay low the pride of the ruthless." Isaiah 13:11.
"Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at the posts of my doorway. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains the favor of the LORD. But he who fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death.” (Wisdom speaking. Proverbs 8:34-36. Wisdom is humility toward God, not the arrogance of rebellion and seeking one's own way.)
A warning with an invitation:
"'Are they ashamed of the abomination they have committed? No, they have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they will collapse,' says the LORD. This is what the LORD says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’ Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’ I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen for the sound of the ram’s horn.’ But they answered, ‘We will not listen!’" Jeremiah 6:15-17.
Yes, ask for the ancient paths, and walk in it.
In Christ alone, "Wisdom rests in the heart of the discerning; even among fools she is known. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people." Proverbs 14:33,34.
Troubled times? Not hard to see why, since priorities are upside down and backs have been turned on the Creator, Savior, and Sanctifier of our souls and bodies. God and His ways do not change, just because in our pride we think we're sophisticated and "enlightened."
